Dr Mmaphuti Kaaka

Founder of Khumo Health

She obtained several post-matric qualifications including BSC, MBBCh and MMed Psychiatry degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. She passed the psychiatry board exams and has an FCPsych (SA) qualification from the Colleges of Medicine South Africa.

While training in Anatomical Pathology, she developed a keen eye for detail while acquiring skills to understand human physical illness via autopsy and histopathology work.

It was her love for people and desire to forge meaningful human connections to heal individuals and communities which led to her transition to psychiatry. She served the people of Soweto as a psychiatrist and passionately advocated for the rights of society's vulnerable, in their most vulnerable states. Everyone who knows her will arrest to her generosity, empathy, soft hearted nature and her bright, keen and optimistic mind.

Dr Kaaka brings a wealth of experience to Khumo Health where she will continue to help humans overcome adversity via healing relationships.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected.

Mental Health Conditions

Mental illnesses are disorders which range from mild to severe, which adversely affect a person's function. Around 30% of South Africans are estimated to experience mental illness in their lifetime.

Mental illness demands urgent attention, as stigma and a lack of access remain the road blocks to care, treatment and support which is necessary to ensure dignity and quality of life for affected individuals./p>
