01About

Dr Mmaphuti Kaaka

Founder of Khumo Health

She obtained several post-matric qualifications including BSC, MBBCh and MMed Psychiatry degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand. She passed the psychiatry board exams and has an FCPsych (SA) qualification from the Colleges of Medicine South Africa.

While training in Anatomical Pathology, she developed a keen eye for detail while acquiring skills to understand human physical illness via autopsy and histopathology work.

It was her love for people and desire to forge meaningful human connections to heal individuals and communities which led to her transition to psychiatry. She served the people of Soweto as a psychiatrist and passionately advocated for the rights of society's vulnerable, in their most vulnerable states. Everyone who knows her will arrest to her generosity, empathy, soft hearted nature and her bright, keen and optimistic mind.

Dr Kaaka brings a wealth of experience to Khumo Health where she will continue to help humans overcome adversity via healing relationships.

The Khumo Health approach

02Approach

  • i.

    Assessment

Your first consultation is unhurried and sensitive — a professional assessment that gathers your story with care, while the foundations of a genuine therapeutic relationship are laid from minute one.

  • ii.

    Empowering the patient

Care is built in collaboration and shaped around your values. You lead, we guide — you are a partner in every decision about your treatment, never a passenger.

  • iii.

    Tailored treatment plans

Treatment made to measure: every plan is personalised through a holistic biopsychosocial-cultural lens, drawing in allied professionals whenever your care calls for it.

  • iv.

    Informed decisions

Nothing about you without you. Informed consent, honest feedback, clear diagnosis and real psychoeducation — you will always have the knowledge your healing journey needs.

Services

03What we offer

Anxiety

Anxiety and OCD

Characterized by excessive worry or intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors. Assessment involves understanding symptoms and their impact. Treatment includes medication and therapy, notably cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Long-term management may be necessary, with higher medication doses for OCD.

Sleep problems

Sleep Disorders

Diagnosed through assessment, treatment targets specific causes with supportive care.

Cognitive

Cognitive Disorders

Range from ADHD to dementia which affect the brain causing neurological, cognitive and behavioral problems. Management is mainly supportive, medication used when necessary. Family involvement is vital.

Depression

Depression

Varied types require individualized assessment and treatment. Therapy addresses core beliefs and negative thinking. Suicide risk is notable, and treatment resistance can occur.

PTSD

PTSD

Trauma alters the mind, changes the person, necessitating prompt diagnosis and referral for trauma-focused treatment.

Burnout

Work-related Stress

Assessment and intervention mitigate toxic workplace effects on mental health and productivity.

Personality

Personality Disorders

Stem from childhood interpersonal experiences, impairing self-perception and relationships with others. Therapy is primary, with medication support.

Substance

Substance Abuse

Result from substance misuse, requiring assessment and motivational interviewing for behaviour change.

Bipolar

Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders

These often severe mental illnesses require prompt treatment to prevent recurrence and functional impairment. Medication management emphasises minimising side effects for lifelong management.

04Why it matters

Mental wellness shapes everything — how we think and feel, how we weather stress, how we love, work, and choose.

An estimated 3 in 10 South Africans will experience mental illness in their lifetime, yet stigma and access still stand between people and care. Reaching out early protects your dignity and quality of life — and you don't have to do it alone.

What patients say

07In their own words

I had a problem with alcohol and cannabis and I never believed I could stay sober, yet I had been to multiple rehabs. The doctor (Dr Kaaka) helped me to get back on my feet with medication which I so needed. She motivated me to want a different life. My lifestyle changed because I was able to see myself in someone's eyes, and Dr Kaaka handled my issues with kindness and warmth.

K, 47 years old

Before seeing Dr Kaaka, I was struggling with depression and anxiety and I was also suicidal. She prescribed medication and helped me to feel better. I was referred by a Psychiatrist to the Doctor and it changed my life. My life has improved, I am a good husband now. I have become an advocate for mental health.

K, 46 years old

My son has schizophrenia and was treated at multiple facilities satisfactorily, but he has never been this well... He is so well now and I thank Dr Kaaka for how she has included the family in my son's care. It has made a huge difference.
